Speaking

It begins with a story.

Kids These Days

When people find out that I'm a high school teacher, their first reaction often sounds something like this: "I don't know how you do it.  Kids these days must be really tough to manage."  Why is this usually the first response about high school culture?  Where does this impression come from?  In reality, people's assumption that schools are simply hotbeds of bullying and misbehaviour are way off base.  In this engaging talk, I will tell the real story about kids these days.  You'll leave feeling good about the positive culture that pervades your own school and the willingness to strengthen it.

You are the Author of your own Coming Out Story

Times have certainly changed for gay youth but one thing hasn't:  the coming out narrative.  No matter how much 'it gets better', gay youth still face the personal obstacle of how and when they will share their story with loved ones, friends, and even strangers.  Ironically, the great thing about coming out is that it never ends.  As a gay educator, I will share the surprising and magical ways my own coming out story has unfolded in the high school environment in order to give hope to young people, their allies, and the staff members who work with them.
